Learn how to play Magic the Gathering at Halcyon!

First, our Event Coordinator will help you set up a Wizards Account and use it to register you for the event; this is necessary to receive your Welcome Deck. We'll also show you the Magic Companion app and explain how you can sign up for events and track life totals right in the app.

Then, we'll direct you to the Magic Academy: Deck Building introductory video - you're able to watch this on your own device! After you finish the video, we'll give you access to the Magic chaff cabinet to use as a card pool, a Learn-to-Play brochure, pocket reference card, and sticker sheet.

To build your deck, you'll sort out cards into color piles, identify the cards you want to build around, then build your first 40-card deck. There will also be a deck review phase where you show your deck to the event coordinator or an experienced player.

The event organizer will then help split players into pairs to play against each other; this will be free-play and we will assist players in finding new opponents as needed. Players should share their decks with each other before beginning the match and discuss strategies while they play to help build understanding of different colors and strategies.
